My Tolkien Project Summer 2026

As you might already know, I teach part-time during the school year. That means that my summer schedule looks a bit different, and every summer, I try to do some sort of self-directed professional development. I’ve done courses through Coursera (one of my favorites was Organising an Empire: The Assyrian Way), as well as other online courses. This summer, I’ve decided to do a self-directed journey through some of JRR Tolkien’s works and works about him that I haven’t read yet.

Beyond the books pictured below, I am also reading The Fall of Gondolin and The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth by Ruth Noel. I will also listen to various podcast episodes, and I have some assignments and projects that I’ve designed for myself. I’ll be sharing occasional tidbits in my newsletter, if you want to follow along. I may, down the road, turn this into a more fleshed out blog series, but I don’t have concrete plans for that yet.

Announcing ...

As I mentioned briefly in my reading and writing goals for 2026, I am publishing a book of poetry later this year. I don’t have a release date yet, but I’m hoping it will be out in the world by the end of the summer.

This collection explores the intersection of atomic precision and the infinite soul, weaving the rigid structure of the elements into the fluid tapestry of human experience. Through these verses, the fundamental laws of science become a new liturgy for understanding the quiet miracles of daily existence. To keep up with announcements about my book, please check back here often or sign up for my newsletter. I will also be announcing details about my launch team in the near future.

Reading and Writing Goals 2026

This past year, I had one reading and three writing goals. I also participated in a couple of reading challenges.

Goals for 2025

- Writing: I was hoping to move forward with my first children’s book as well as work on two German-to-English translation projects.
- Reading: read a total of 52 books

How did I do?

- Writing:

Project 1: A children’s book on Harold and Heather. I have talked a bit about this project before, but in 2024, I was finally able to finish my first draft of the story. During 2025, this project took a backseat, but I’m hopeful that I may have found an illustrator. More details to come soon!

Project 2: I published all three parts of my Melanchthon translation project on my blog. You can also get all three parts of Melanchthon’s German Catechism in one Kindle book.

Project 3: I’ve started translating Johannes Tauler’s sermons from German into English. You can read the ones I’ve shared already on my blog. https://becausehelives.blogspot.com/search/label/Tauler

- Reading: I exceeded my reading goal this year: I read 111 books!

Goals for 2026

- Writing: I have four writing projects in the works for 2026.

Project 2: I started translating Johannes Tauler’s sermons from German into English in 2025 and posted the first four on my blog. I’ll be posting more of them in 2026.

Project 3: I am currently in the process of editing a book featuring contributions from several different authors. I plan to share more specific details about the project and its release as things progress further down the road.

Project 4: I am pleased to announce that I will be releasing my first book of poetry later this year. I look forward to sharing further details about the collection as the launch date approaches.

- Reading: My plan is to read a total of 52 books this year. This was my goal for 2025, and I like it as a goal for 2026.

How about you? Any reading or writing goals for 2026?

A (Mostly) Bookish Trip to New York City

In August, I got to travel to New York City. Some of the highlights: the main branch of the New York Public Library, the original Winnie the Pooh and friends, Grand Central Station, the Jane Austen exhibit at The Morgan Library and Museum, the 9/11 memorial, Strand Books, Times Square, and the Empire State Building.

You can see some of my pictures in this slideshow.

A Trip to Prince Edward Island

Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to travel to Prince Edward Island. I was first introduced to Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery as a pre-teen, and since then, I’ve read pretty much everything by Montgomery that is in print. I’ve also wanted to visit Montgomery’s home island ever since then. And, this summer, I finally made it happen.

I spent three nights total on the island and spent about a day and a half exploring sites connected to Maud (as she liked to be called). Maud spent most of her growing-up years in Cavendish, which was also the inspiration for Avonlea. The house that was the inspiration for Green Gables is now a heritage site. The museum is well laid out and really nice, but it was also quite busy when I was there. As a result, I didn’t spend quite as much time there as I might have. Across from Cavendish Cemetery (where Maud is buried) is Montgomery Park, which features a statue of Maud.

In Cavendish, I also stopped by the site of the home that she grew up in (the building is no longer standing), the church she attended, and the post office that she helped to run. From there, I drove out to the house she was born in. This was my favorite stop of the day because the museum was well-documented, and the person on staff that day knew a lot about Maud and her family. Also, it was much less busy and had more of the vibe of a little historical society stop.

Next, I stopped at the Anne of Green Gables Museum in Park Corner. Maud had lived here for a while, and this house inspired some of her non-Anne books, including Pat of Silver Bush. My final stop for that day was the Bideford Parsonage Museum. Maud had roomed with the parson’s family there for one year while she was teaching at the local school.

The next day, my last “Maud” location that I visited was the Lower Bedeque School House in Bedeque. While the school house has been moved some from its original location, Maud did teach in that exact one-room school house.

I also explored other parts of PEI that were not directly connected to L. M. Montgomery, and I did enjoy those as well, but I wanted to document my time with Maud and her island. I know that sometimes we can be dismissive of novels, especially novels with teenage protagonists and aimed towards that age bracket, but Montgomery’s novels and her characters have encouraged me over the decades as I’ve read and re-read her works. I appreciate the enthusiasm for life, the grit and tenacity, and the love despite hardships that her characters embody.

2025 Reading Challenges

While my overall reading goal in 2025 is to read 52 books, I've decided to also participate in a second reading challenge this year.

Last year I participated in the challenges listed below:

2024 Audiobook Challenge
My goal: Socially Awkward (Don’t talk to me): 15-20 books. I listened to 47 audio books.

European Reading Challenge 2024
The idea is to read books by European authors or books set in European countries (no matter where the author comes from). The books can be anything – novels, short stories, memoirs, travel guides, cookbooks, biography, poetry, or any other genre. You can participate at different levels, but each book must be by a different author and set in a different country – it's supposed to be a tour. My goal: "Honeymooner" level, which means I planned to read at least 4 books from Europe. I met my goal.

So, what's up for 2025? Here is the challenge I'm hoping to tackle.

2025 Audiobook Challenge
I'm aiming for Socially Awkward (Don’t talk to me): 15-20 books.

Reading and Writing Goals 2025

This past year I had two reading and writing goals. I also participated in a couple of reading challenges.

Goals for 2024
- Writing: I was hoping to complete a children’s book draft and to publish and release a Bible study book.
- Reading: read a total of 52 books

How did I do?
- Writing: I did quite a bit of writing this past year. I published the book on 1 John and finished the draft of the children’s book.
- Reading: I exceeded my reading goal this year: I read 104 books!

Goals for 2025
- Writing: I have three writing projects in the works for 2025.

Project 1: A children’s book on Harold and Heather. I have talked a bit about this project before, but in August, I was finally able to finish my first draft of the story. I’m still working on finding an illustrator. My hope is that some of these details will come together in the next couple of months.

Project 2: A German-to-English theology translation project. Well, the first of two German-to-English translation projects. I recently translated a small portion of Philip Melanchthon’s works from German to English. I will be publishing my translation work in serial form on my blog in 2025 and then compile it into a short book that will be available on Kindle.

Project 3: A second German-to-English theology translation project! I’ve recently started translating Johannes Tauler’s sermons from German into English. I will start posting my translations on my blog in 2025 (after I finish the posts on Melanchthon). My current aim is to post one sermon a month. My end goal is eventually to compile all of them into a book as well. More details on that down the road.

- Reading: My plan is to read a total of 52 books this year. This was my goal for 2024, and I like it as a goal for 2025.

How about you? Any reading or writing goals for 2025?
