What I'm Reading This Week - April 29th

This week's been a rather busy one for me.  As a result, I haven't done much reading online.  But, I have had some time to do some book reading.

Here's what I've been reading:

  • The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson - in honor of having been in Scotland last week
  • Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
  • The Republic by Plato - I need a little heavy reading every once in a while
  • Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins - although Collins is best known for his books The Moonstone and The Woman in White, this book is my favorite of all the ones he's written

Let's talk! What have you been reading this week? Post a comment below or send me an email.

Amy Carmichael - "If" Quote

As we come to close of this Easter season, this quote reminds us how we must daily take up our own cross.

"If . . .  I am perturbed by the reproach and misunderstanding that may follow action taken for the good of souls for whom I must give account; if I cannot commit the matter and go on in peace and in silence, remembering Gethsemane and the cross, then I know nothing of Calvary love."

What I'm Reading This Week - April 22nd

Here are some articles and books I'd like to highlight this week.  Enjoy!

A Secret Gift by Ted Gup (book)
I've been listening to this book on CD and have been struck at not only the story of helping others that it tells, but also at the insight into the stories of everyday people during the Great Depression.

The Library Card as a Pop-Culture Fiend's Ticket to Geek Paradise | Linda Holmes | NPR.org
A fresh look at what your local library can offer you.  (hint: libraries aren't as scary or ancient as you might think they are)

Crossway Impact
Crossway has launched a new rewards program.  If you like to read and are looking for books that Crossway offers, this might be something to check out.

Amy Carmichael - "If" Quote

"If . . .  I cannot bear to be like the father who did not soften the rigors of the far country; if, in this sense, I refuse to allow the law of God (the way of the transgressors is hard) to take effect, because of the distress it causes me to see that law in operation, then I know nothing of Calvary love."

Why We Need Jane Austen or How to be a Gentleman with Examples of Good and Bad | Front Porch Republic [via Challies.com]

Most of you know that I'm a confirmed Jane Austenite.  However, Mark's article speaks to all of us, not just those of us who have read Austen's books countless times.

Why We Lack Understanding | My Utmost for His Highest

This quote stood out to me: "So many people . . . have seen a vision and they testify to it, but there is no connection between what they say and how they live."

Let's talk: Have you read anything interesting this week?  If so, I'd love to hear about it.

Amy Carmichael - "If" Quote

"If . . .  I deal with wrong for any other reason than that implied in the words, 'From His right hand went a fiery law for them. Yea, He loved the people'; if I can rebuke without a pang, then I know nothing of Calvary love."

What I'm Reading This Week - April 1st

Here are some of the things I've been reading this week. Have fun browsing!
I really appreciate this article by Phil. He gets right to the heart of this issue – and what he has to say applies also to how we approach the gospel here in the United States.

Literary Apologetics | Louis A. Markos | in the Christian Research Journal
This article delves into how the writings of G. K. Chesterton and Dorothy Sayers approached apologetics. Quite the interesting read!
Looking for some practical advice? Get your dose here! Alexis has some great tips on things to pack for a long trip. I can think of trips I have been on where I have wished for some of these.

I hope you have a great weekend!
