And Can It Be?

And can it be that I should gain
An int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me?

He left His Father's throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race;
'Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature's night;
Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th'eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

And Can It Be? by Charles Wesley

Steadfast Love

chesed - that steadfast love. That amazing love. That love that looked down from on high and saw the helpless plight of man. That love that pursued Adam and Eve after they had sinned and had hidden them. That love that chose Abraham and Sarah. That love that looked at flawed Moses and chose to use him. That love that made a shepherd boy a king. That love that continued to redeem back His people even though they strayed time and time again.

That love that culminated in sending His only Son to die a horrific death in our place. "Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned He stood, sealed my pardon with His blood: Hallelujah, what a Savior!" That love that continues to pursue us throughout the ages.

We are in such need. There is nothing we bring to the table. We have all rebelled. We have all turned to our own ways, to pursue our own desires. We have traded the glory of God for cheap and useless and meaningless things. We are in such need!

Amazing love! Amazing grace! "How sweet the sound" - hearing of God's amazing grace, over and over again. "How can it be that Thou my God shouldst die for me?" Would the God of the universe really stoop to take my place? And yet He has! What love! Words fail. Gratitude fails. All that remains is to humbly say, "Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!"
