Amy Carmichael - Quote

"Not in vain the tedious toil
On an unresponsive soil,
Travail, tears in secret shed
Over hope that lay as dead.
All in vain, thy faint heart cries,
Not in vain, thy Lord replies;
Nothing is too good to be;
Then believe, believe to see."

What I'm Reading This Week - August 26

I've had another really busy week that was filled with working a translation project and with working on preparing lessons for the new school year.  I really didn't even have time to do any reading this week.

So, I thought I'd leave you with some of my favorite blogs on books and writing:

Alexis Grant - The Traveling Writer
Alexis writes about writing, traveling, and social media.

Austenprose
A great blog about Jane Austen's novels and movies and sequels that have sprung out of her work.  (And, you really shouldn't be too surprised to find an Austen blog within my list.)

Daily Writing Tips
Practical, well-written, and very useful.  If you do any writing at all, this blog is worth following.

The Thesis Whisperer
A fun, upbeat, and yet down-to-earth insight into academic writing and its joys and woes.

WordServe Water Cooler
This blog is written by a group of authors.  It just launched in July, and I've found the posts inspiring and helpful.

How about you?  Any blog recommendations?

Amy Carmichael - Quote

"O Thou who art my quietness, my deep repose,
My rest from strife of tongues, my holy hill,
Fair is Thy pavilion, where I hold me still.
Back let them fall from me, my clamorous foes,
Confusions multiplied;
From crowding things of sense I flee, and Thee I hide.
Until this tyranny be overpast,
Thy hand will hold me fast;
What though the tumult of the storm increase,
Grant to Thy servant strength, O Lord, and bless with peace."

What I'm Reading This Week - August 19

It's been another busy week for me. However, as always, I spent some time reading.

Here's the books that have been in my reading stack this week:
- Workmen of God by Oswald Chambers
- Words and Rules by Steven Pinker
- Organized Teacher, Happy Classroom by Melanie Unger

A friend of mine posted his first blog post this week. Read it for some insights on how to "muster that final ounce of motivation."

Also, until August 22nd, Writer's Digest is offering 9 free eBook downloads in their Back to School sale.

Amy Carmichael - Quote

"He said, "I will accept the breaking sorrow
Which God tomorrow
Will to His son explain."
Then did the turmoil deep within him cease.
Not vain the word, not vain;
For in acceptance lieth peace."

Amy Carmichael - Quote

"Lord, grant to me a quiet mind,
That trusting Thee, for Thou art kind,
I may go on without a fear,
For Thou, my Lord, art always near."

What I'm Reading This Week - August 5

I can't get over the fact that this is the end of the first week of August.  Where has the summer gone?  I'm in the throes of planning for a new school year (my first classes start the last week of August).  I've also been busy this week with teaching music lessons and doing some freelance writing.  As always, however, I have managed to carve out some time for reading.  I think that if I didn't, I'd go crazy.

Here's what's been in my stack this week:
- Radical by David Platt
- So Send I You by Oswald Chambers
- Read This Before Our Next Meeting by Al Pittampalli (free download for Kindle)
- Buch der Lieder by Heinrich Heine (from DailyLit.com)

I hope you have a great weekend!

Amy Carmichael - Quote

"What room is there for troubled fear?
I know my Lord, and He is near;
And He will light my candle, so
That I may see the way to go."
