Calm. Peace. Inner rest no matter the external turmoil. We seem to be in constant search for it, and yet it continues to elude us.
Such peace cannot come from human effort. No amount of positive thinking or meditation will effect this peace.
But God promises us His peace that surpasses all understanding. In Philippians 4, Paul details how we find this peace. Instead of looking inward at what we can bring to the situation, we need to look to God.
Rejoice in the Lord. And, not just when things are going well, but always. Even when there is strife. Even when there is hurt. Even when there is pain. Even when there is no admission of guilt or wrongdoing. Even then.
Be known as a gentle and reasonable person. Are you prone to flying off the handle? Are you inclined to blow up at the slightest provocation? Instead of responding in anger, respond with gentleness.
How can you manage to do that? Because God is near, and He is in control of all things, even those little annoying things.
Since He is in control, we do not need to worry about anything. Instead, in and by faith, we turn to Him and pour out our needs, desires, frustrations, and wishes before Him. He alone has the power to do anything about them anyways.
As we rely upon Him in prayer and gratefulness, our eyes are turned away from our turmoil and directed to the God Who "is in the heavens" and Who "does all that He pleases." As we focus on God, our inner turmoil calms, regardless of what happens to our external circumstances. Our God is in control.
