Jesus, the Preeminent One

In Colossians 1 Paul thanks God for the believers in Colossae. He is thankful for the evidence of spiritual fruit in their lives: for their faith, their love, and the hope that is before them.

Paul also prays that they will be filled with the knowledge of God's will. That they would walk worthy of the Lord. That they would increase in the knowledge of God. That they would be strengthened with might. The only means that makes any of these things possible is the completed redemption through Christ's blood.

Jesus is the very image of God. He is the Creator of the universe. He is the Sustainer of life. He is the Head of the church. He is the Preeminent One. There is no one before Him.

In this is the Christian life grounded. Only by placing Christ in first place in our lives can we live lives pleasing to God.
