The Mercy of God's Power
“To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who laid out the earth above the waters,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who made great lights,
For His mercy endures forever—
The sun to rule by day,
For His mercy endures forever;
The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His mercy endures forever.”
- Psalm 136:5-9
Our universe does not exist by mere chance. Rather, a loving and kind Creator carefully crafted the world, the sun, the stars, and the moon. In Genesis, we are told that God spoke the light, the heavens, and the earth into existence. Only an incredibly powerful Being could achieve such a tremendous feat. This power that God so easily demonstrates -- how much effort does it take to speak words? -- points to His unique ability. Who else can achieve such wonders? With such power in His mere words, God would be truly terrifying if we were not also reminded that coupled with His power, He also relates to us with mercy that is never-ending. His mercy holds pace with His power. Were God only powerful and not also merciful, we would be without hope. However, God not only powerfully created our world, but He also seeks us out so that we might know of this mercy.
As we gaze into the night sky and behold the vastness of the universe -- a vastness that our minds truly cannot comprehend -- we are also reminded of the vastness of God's mercy. In lovingkindness, He considered our need and sent Jesus as our substitute on the cross.
As we look out on the grandeur of mountains, the stunning beauty of forests and gardens, and the majesty of oceans, we are reminded that God has made beautiful things for us to enjoy. In this mercy, He has made a world that is not monotone but rather one that explodes in color and teems with diverse life.
As we watch the sun rising and setting, the moon waxing and waning, and constellations traversing the night sky, we are reminded of God's mercy towards us day in and day out. Days, weeks, months, and years pass. Seasons come and go. And yet, through it all, God remains faithful to His promises. His mercy towards us persists in our daily lives and in the various season we encounter. He is trustworthy. Praise be to God for His power and His mercy.

Psalm 115 from the Scottish Psalter
Not unto us, Lord, not to us,
but do thou glory take
Unto thy name, ev'n for thy truth,
and for thy mercy's sake.
O wherefore should the heathen say,
Where is their God now gone?
But our God in the heavens is,
what pleased him he hath done.
Their idols silver are and gold,
work of men's hands they be.
Mouths have they, but they do not speak;
and eyes, but do not see;
Ears have they, but they do not hear;
noses, but savor not;
Hands, feet, but handle not, nor walk;
nor speak they through their throat.
Like them their makers are, and all
on them their trust that build.
O Isr'el, trust thou in the Lord,
he is their help and shield.
O Aaron's house, trust in the Lord,
their help and shield is he.
Ye that fear God, trust in the Lord,
their help and shield he'll be.
The Lord of us hath mindful been,
and he will bless us still:
He will the house of Isr'el bless,
bless Aaron's house he will.
Both small and great, that fear the Lord,
he will them surely bless.
The Lord will you, you and your seed,
aye more and more increase.
O blessed are ye of the Lord,
who made the earth and heav'n.
The heav'n, ev'n heav'ns, are God's, but he
earth to men's sons hath giv'n.
The dead, nor who to silence go,
God's praise do not record.
But henceforth we for ever will
bless God. Praise ye the Lord.
