To the Praise of His Glorious Grace

What astonishing mercy and power:
In accord with his pleasure and will
He created each planet, each flower,
Every galaxy, microbe, and hill.
He suspended the planet in space
To the praise of his glorious grace.

With despicable self-love and rage,
We rebelled and fell under the curse.
Yet God did not rip out the page
And destroy all who love the perverse.
No, he chose us to make a new race,
To the praise of his glorious grace.

Providentially ruling all things
To conform to the end he designed,
He mysteriously governs, and brings
His eternal wise plans into time.
He works out every step, every trace,
To the praise of his glorious grace.

Long before the creation began,
He foreknew those he’d ransom in Christ;
Long before time’s cold hour-glass ran,
He ordained the supreme sacrifice.
In the cross he removed our disgrace,
To the praise of his glorious grace.

We were blessed in the heavenly realms
Long before being included in Christ.
Since we heard the good news, overwhelmed,
We reach forward to seize Paradise.
We shall see him ourselves, face to face,
To the praise of his glorious grace.

Always Obey

Paul challenges the Philippians to be thankful, to be bold, and to obey God. Just what exactly does Paul have in mind?

First of all, Paul commends the Philippians for their consistent obedience (2:12-13).
The Philippians followed God in obedience both when Paul was with them and when he was not. Not only had the Philippian believers made decisions to follow Jesus when Paul had spent time in Philippi, but they had continued in their walk with Him. How did Paul know this? First of all, they had sent Epaphroditus to minister to Paul. They cared for Paul. Had they not been following Jesus, they wouldn’t have actually cared. Secondly, I’m sure Epaphroditus gave Paul an update on how they were doing. Jesus calls us to walk with Him and to be consistently living in obedience to God. While this doesn’t mean that we don’t still sin, it does mean that we are quick to repent and we seek to grow in grace and holiness.

Secondly, their obedience was evidence of God working in them for His glory.
Obeying God from a motivation that wants to please Him (not from a motivation that wants to earn His favor) can only come by the empowering and enabling of the Holy Spirit. The fact that the Philippians consistently obeyed God was evidence of the Holy Spirit working in them. No matter how much we try to please God with our own efforts, we will always fail. However, obeying God because we recognize His grace in our lives and our daily dependence on Him, shows that the Holy Spirit is working in us to grow us to become more like Him.

Always be Bold

Not only does Paul challenge the Philippians to always be thankful, he also challenges them to always be bold. And, he gives himself as an example. His aim isn't to make a name for himself, but rather to shine forth how wonderfully glorious God is.

Paul’s aim is to glorify Christ in his body (1:20).
The Philippians well knew Paul’s willingness to follow Jesus regardless of the cost. For many of them, their first encounter with him had been in connection with his imprisonment in Philippi. Even now as he writes this letter to him, he is imprisoned because of his work for God. Paul was consistent in his commitment to Christ, regardless of the cost. Paul sets us an example of consistent commitment to following Jesus. Are we willing to magnify Christ in our lives? Do those around know that we ALWAYS make this our priority? Whose kingdom do we seek first: God’s kingdom or our kingdom?

Paul faces the uncertainty of the future with the same goal.
Regardless of whether he lives and remains imprisoned, lives and is set free, or dies, Paul strives to further God’s kingdom. If he lives and remains imprisoned, he will continue telling those around him about Jesus. If he lives and is set free, he will go back to traveling around the Roman Empire and telling people about Jesus. If he dies, he will go to be with Jesus, and his death for the sake of the gospel will reinforce the message he’s been spreading ever since he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. We should desire to echo Paul's words, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."
